I love South African wines. I won't pretend to have a favourite, as there is no clear cut winner. With South Africa being a great holiday destination, where the adventure can be filled with experiencing our wildlife in multiple game parks, large or small (safari as my friends from the USA would say). You can also bask in the sun on our world class beaches which brush up against both the Indian and Atlantic Ocean. Add the great weather, and you realise you can experience in one country what most countries boast only a fraction of.
What does this have to do with wine producers being under pressure? Well, all these sights and scenes are finished off by our great food and wine experience. Hearing that the counterfeit industry now has targeted South African Wines, the risk of fraud will have an impact on the perception people have of our wines.
Labels are being produced (forged), which are then stuck on any old plonk (replace plonk with whatever defines bottom of the barrel "not so good stuff". A non-suspecting consumer, drinking this wine, would be left with a bad perception of the wine South Africa produces if this is what they drank and had no prior experience of South African wines.
