A Father's Day Gift That Ages

Father's day is tomorrow, and Maya, my youngest daughter is a child that loves to celebrate everything. She came to me last night, worried that she had not bought me a father's day gift. Her biggest challenge was that she did not know what to get me. The worry in her face was intense and she was really apologetic as she loves giving gifts equally as much as she loves receiving them.

I told her not to feel bad about it, as for me the present is the gift. Knowing how much I mean to her really is gift enough for me. I think it's great to celebrate things like father's day, but the way we are making all these moments more about the commercial than the commemorative, I lose interest. A ten year old really has no business feeling that kind of pressure.

Maya did give me a further gift after that conversation last night. I love sports, and she has recently started playing football. What father would not be chuffed when her daughter tells her she wants to stay up and watch the Netherlands playing against Spain in what was indisputably the best game in the FIFA World Cup 2014. It feels just like yesterday, when her and my eldest daughter Jordan, were blowing the vuvuzela and enjoying the thrills of the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

My gift to me for Father's Day was going through my photos, and grabbing images of my two daughters since 2010. One picture for each year. How they have grown up.
