Martin Luther King Did Not Have A Plan, He Had A Dream!

“I have a dream…” Martin Luther King Jr. said in his speech in 1963. Would anyone who was in Washington to hear him speak that day (and those of us that followed the story thereafter) have been inspired into action had he said “I have a plan…”? Had Martin Luther King given us the “I have a plan…” speech, he would have sounded like the typical politicians we have today, who profess to be leaders with a plan to deliver on the dreams of people. Martin Luther King was not a political leader, he was a Moral Leader! Nelson Mandela is a political leader who has morals. What has happened to the theme of tolerance in this country that Mandela spent 27 years in prison defending? What has happened to the pride of “one team, one nation” that Madiba led? The long walk to freedom seems to be a never ending one.

I did not even know that there was a DA Youth League up until this week, and yet this “vibrant movement of young people” was established in 2010. The reaction to the poster campaign they came out with, which gives a picture of the future they are dreaming of, created a reaction which I don’t think they saw coming. You know what you heard, you know what you thought. Some might have missed it completely, but Mike Elgan even posted on his Google+ account referring to the drama and that told me how viral the reaction had gone! Check his posts from 27^th January 2012, and why I was blow away is that he is a technology writer, he does not dabble in politics, especially foreign affairs. Have people become that entrenched in their archaic belief systems that nothing else is an option?

If as a person you cannot recognise that you are a unique human being and you can make your own judgements and take your own actions, you will never progress to your dream or your vision! You will never be free, as you will constantly be swayed by the momentum of the public. Following the lead of people you don’t know and having no idea of what their vision and values are will lead you to their dreams, not yours.

If you can’t see and recognise yourself, you have no chance of seeing other people. You will likely be fixated with the different things that they believe. In isiZulu, you greet a person by saying “Sawubona”, which roughly translates to “I see you”. Start seeing other people for the people they are, and you will realise that just like you, they want to be heard. If each of us as individuals do not tolerate other people, then who do you expect to tolerate you? You cannot underestimate the overwhelming baggage you carry about your past and the impact it can have on crippling your experience of today, and the future you dream of.

What picture would we see, if you stopped putting up a front, and actually spoke about what you as an individual believe in, rather than what you are expected to believe in? Do you only see your side of the story on how things should be? The DA Youth League have a dream where we live in a world where interracial couples won’t cause a second look. “we need to lead and make that vision a reality. We need to inspire young people and show them exactly what we mean… a South Africa that wouldn’t tolerate intolerance – as is the main point of this poster.” ~ extract from Mbali Ntuli’s letter, post the poster reaction. Mbali Ntuli is the DA Youth Federal Chairperson, and I did not know her or of her until reading this letter.

I have bought into the spirit of Martin Luther King’s “I had a dream” speech.  I have bought into the spirit of Steve Biko’s “Black is beautiful” bringing the awakening that we are fine as we are, we are all human beings. Steve Biko, was also not a politician, but someone who had a dream. I have bought into the spirit of Nelson Mandela, of not looking at people who have a different point of view to mine, as enemies and hating them, but seeing people for who they are and looking for alternatives to get onto a road that serves all our freedom.

I am satisfied to see a youthful mind that dreams of such a future, where images such as that in the poster, would not make you look twice! These are minds that do not let their beliefs and dreams be limited to the nightmare that so many live today. Let’s stop being veterans of creative suffering and allow people to live their dream of choice. “Let freedom reign!”
