There is nothing wrong with being obsessed with healthy eating. The cynic in me can't help but wonder who funded the research that made for this article by the Wall Street Journal, titled, "When Healthy Eating Calls For Treatment". The article makes for an "interesting read", and I had to contain myself, focusing to finish reading it, rather than getting lost in poking holes in the observations they were making.
What worries me though is that people are gullible and easy to manipulate, particularly when they are receiving information from a doctor. Doctors have been positioned as the authority figure on just about anything and people tend to trust them without question. So in case you are one of those people, let me remind you that these experts are calling this disorder orthorexia nervosa, AND it's not yet an official diagnosis in the DSM (the end all and be all of all psychiatric illnesses).
I am displaying symptoms of being obsessed with healthy eating if I look at this research and their findings. If that makes me have a disorder, I am happy with that label of being orthorexic. I don't trust the Heart Check Stamp on food, because I don't believe the Dietary Guidelines Of The American Heart Association serve the consumer.
I eat pretty much anything that I think is nutritious, but avoid sugar (even food high in natural sugar) and food high in carbohydrates (high in carbohydrates is more than 10g per 100g of the food). This does not mean I did not eat bread this past week. Avoid means when I am at the airport lounge, I will eat the sandwich if I can't see anything else healthier to eat. You can only change the world one meal at a time!
I hope you read the article in the Wall Street Journal regardless. It is always good to listen to a point of view different to yours, even if you don't agree with it. I never argue what constitutes a healthy diet. I just prefer to follow my inner compass in terms of what makes for healthy eating for me and what will contribute to a quality life for me.
As for the cupcake in picture, my 10 year old daughter baked it. Believe it or not, it is sugar free and gluten free. Do you want the Recipe? There is nothing wrong with healthy eating.
