It was a Sunday morning that was overcast. Looking out of the window of my hotel room in Spier (Stellenbosch), there was no sign of the sun, just clouds that looked set to be settled for the day. It was a pity, as after breakfast, we had wanted to sit by the pool, which is near the Camelot Spa. Given the weather, with nothing to hang around for after checking out, we said our goodbyes, and the two families went their separate ways home. I felt like seeing the sea, so we decided to drive along the R310.
As we got closer to Muizenberg, the clouds were no longer, and the sun was beaming. A true reflection of Cape Town weather, as I always wonder which area exactly the Cape Town weather reports is reflecting. It was an obvious choice that even though the Muizenberg beach would be packed, we stop just to smell the ocean and hear those crashing waves. Well, we made the obvious choice! My wife knows that I don't do well in crowds, and she tried to be accommodating suggesting we give it a miss. I braced myself and stuck with the decision. I knew that the joy it would bring to my wife and two daughters, would way exceed any form of discomfort I would feel.
We found parking eventually, and I got paranoid about the luggage exposed in the car, as my wife's car is the soccer mom car, the Chrysler Voyager. I walked towards the beach where I could still see the car, yet feel close enough to the sea. The beach, as beautiful as it was to take in, with all the people out to enjoy themselves, was overwhelming for me.
I agreed to step away, and listen and watch from a distance, rather than be in the thick of it. My wife and kids would go for a walk along the beach while I did that. That way, everybody gets to enjoy the beach, just how it best suits them.
Before I stepped back towards the car park and a safe distance from the beach, I had to take this shot.
