Racism is an open secret. We like to pretend it's not there, and only behind closed doors is it acknowledged. In the past five days alone, Donald Sterling was caught on tape for racism, and the consequences are that he will be banned from the NBA, having to sell his ownership in the L.A. Clippers. Dani Alves, the Brazilian football player, had to be composed as he reacted to a banana thrown at him during a Barcelona and Villarreal match. In South Africa, the Sports And Recreation Minister, Fikile Mbalula, made a shocking comment about Kenya's sporting acumen, referring to their athletes as "drowning".
These are the publicised incidents that came across my eyeballs. When do we teach our children to head towards the path of elitism? It is certainly not something they are born with! Something we do or say as parents goes a long way into shaping their thinking and belief that they are superior or inferior because of the colour of their skin, or their ethnicity?
I think in this day and age, it is shameful if as a parent you are not promoting an approach of an open mind to your children. What good could possibly come from making what is Black and White so separate and unequal?
