Who Are You Here To Serve?

It is a well accepted belief that people often leave their employer, not because they no longer value the business and where it is going, but more because they do not get along with their manager. This is not always the case when someone resigns, but look at the examples you know of and the reason people have resigned from a position which seemed to be going well and draw your own conclusion.

It is sad when talented people leave an organisation purely because they are disillusioned with their boss, as opposed to now looking to be challenged in a new environment. It's a push factor, not a pull factor! Reality is, bad managers are everywhere and not limited to your current employer. If you don't learn to deal with them now, when will you learn to deal with them? There is no guarantee the next one will be better.

If you work for an organisation that you feel first and foremost is bigger than any one individual, including your boss, would that make your decision outcome different? Your loyalty should be to the business, and that is the purpose to serve. Your loyalty should not be to the personality of your boss. Often leaders lose sight of their objectivity as their objectives are self serving rather than serving the business. That does not make the organisation bad, it makes the person a bad leader.

So when you wake up in the morning, and you work those late hours, who is it that you are out there to serve?
